A DUBIOUS LEGACY

Bill Clinton has been searching for a legacy by which his terms in office will be remembered. He is running all over the world pontificating in search of a lasting remembrance. It is submitted to you dear reader that he has a legacy and it began the day he was elected and before the day he was sworn as President. And what is that legacy you ask? One word will suffice. Immorality.

In the mid-sixties the free love crowd (call it uninhibited sex) began to extol the virtues of throwing off the moral constraints that had served us very well as a nation to keep unwanted behavior in check. God’s morals were shoved aside and ungodly, atheistic, immoral behavior began to be practiced not only by the younger set but by adults who thought they were being liberated from the old ways of behaving. Instead of setting the moral standard for behavior, they succumbed to the immoral ways which further degraded the nation’s moral beliefs.

None of the behavior occurred in an isolated vacuum. People of all ages could see the change in movies, TV, videos, magazines, and newspapers. To say that what was being seen, heard, and read didn’t matter since those activities don’t influence anyone is a good argument for doing away with public schools since they aren’t influencing anyone for the good very much either. But people do respond to what they see, hear, and read and that brings us to an unwanted consequence of the dubious legacy.

Open immorality seeped into the White House in the name of William Jefferson Clinton. Granted that other occupants of the Oval Office weren’t as pure as wind driven snow in times past, they didn’t take their antics into the office. Whatever they did they waited until after office hours so as not to be on the taxpayer’s nickel. Not Clinton though, he engaged in the illicit activities on company time. Oral sex became a topic of everyday news and talk everywhere else, including the schools amongst the most vulnerable of our citizens, the young students who were learning things not intended to be learned in schools.

Now daily we read and hear of teachers who are seducing young people in their homes, cars, and classrooms engaging in all types of sexual conduct. The ages of the teachers range from mid twenties to about 45 with most in the 30s. There is a commonality in that those so involved are the children of the 60s free love era when morals didn’t matter. People of substance are upset and wanting the perpetrators dealt with severely. They should be and in most cases will be.

But why are those who should know better and who are in responsible positions behaving in less than stellar way? They are a product of society and society has winked at the behavior that over the years has become more and more immoral. The die was cast in the 1960s for the place we now find ourselves morally.

A survey among young people a few years ago indicated that they believed that oral sex wasn’t sex. The same survey indicated that they didn’t see anything wrong with two consenting people engaging in sex no matter the ages or who their positions in society. The one telling part of the survey indicated that Clinton’s proclivities were very much a part of the minds of the respondents. “I didn’t have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.” To his credit he did remember her name and didn’t use the word is which he couldn’t later define.

The dubious legacy of William Jefferson Clinton is alive and doing damage to our nation in ways never imagined. In Sorting It Out, the conclusion is that the sorting shows immorality becoming the norm for the nation.
