Generation Gap |
|
As I grew up I began to see a split between generations, Young and old even in church and all across the nation. You say you really love us and you say you really care, But all you ever do it seems is complain about our hair.
We have hair of many colors, a coat of arms we carry, But all we ever hear you say is our daughters you’ll never marry. I go to church on Sunday, even Sunday school, I even became a Christian when Christian wasn’t cool.
My girlfriend has those piercings from her head down to her toes, She’s even got a nose ring ‘cause that’s what she has chose. My dear parents, I just don’t get it, you say she’s very wrong, Yet on Sunday she’s in children’s church leading all the songs.
We’re not at all religious, pious natures we don’t know, Yet every time there’s an alter call we’re the first to go, To pray for friends and their hurts, all we do is care, Yet because we dress so differently all you do is stare.
The world we face is not the one that any of you knew, Internet, Aids, and terrorism, only to name a few. James Dean and Buddy Holly, Zoot suits and soft ice cream, Growing up as you did, we can only dream.
We don’t know drive in movies, Happy Days or crusin’, It’s all in the way we look you say, you think it’s drugs we’re usin’. Even the way we worship God is a very different thing, The only thing that should matter to you is that we know Christ is King.
Love us please, hug us tight, never let us go, We’re always looking up to you; please tell us what you know. Our clothes are wrinkled, we need a bath, yet I promise our spirits are true, We are saved by grace by Jesus Christ; we want to be like you. These words to you aren’t meant to hurt, we love you oh so deep, Please give your time and love us back, our promises we will keep.
Oh Lord, my God, we are a lost generation, why aren’t our elders near? All we want is a lot of hugs and some one who will hear. Our prayers, our pleas, our lonesome hearts, crying out for love, We’re no different from anyone because of God above. © 2004 JEC |
