There is an old saying used years ago that was uttered when a job needed
doing and nobody wanted to step up and do the task. The reply was “Let
George do it.” The result was that the job wasn’t done since no one saw
themselves as George; not to mention the fact there wasn’t anyone named
George anywhere to be found.

In like regard, a malady has grown to infectious proportions among
believers in God. They depend on God to bail them out of the messes in
which they find themselves because they didn’t follow God as they claim
to do. Make a mess and God will bail you out. That only works for
salvation and not for rescues from sinful decisions or just plain wrong
decisions that otherwise in some other circumstances might have been
correct.

Believers ask for God’s help and then wait for God to act in some way to
bring them relief. When he doesn’t, they complain that God isn’t doing
what they imagine he should do for them. Somewhere along the line they
haven’t been taught that God doesn’t work that way. The ones who so
believe such foolishness need to read the Bible to see the methods God
employs to bring about his blessings and change in circumstances.

Only a few times has God acted on his own without human’s following his
instructions. He destroyed life on earth with a flood; he made a flaming
ruin out of Sodom and Gomorrah; He killed the Egyptian children, parted
the Red Sea and delivered manna to his people. All of these were without
human intervention. But in many of all the other cases of God working in
the lives of people, he has used humans to do his work. Abraham offered
Isaac for a sacrifice. God spared him. Moses went up on the Mountain to
receive the law that was given to the Jews. Jesus sacrificing himself
for us is another. Those are three examples of God using humans to do
his will.

God wants people to be ready and willing to do his work. In Isaiah 6:8,
we find these words: Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying,
Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send
me. Isaiah heard the voice of the God and was ready to do
whatever God wanted. Isaiah didn’t wait on George to answer nor did he
say “Let George do it.”

A pernicious belief has invaded the minds of the people who claim to
follow Jesus. They think they can’t be involved in politics or
government since it is secular. Those who so believe had better read the
Bible to find the truth! Jesus said let your light shine. Paul said to
do good to all men. Isn’t being involved in government one way to do
good by following God’s principles as did the founders? If those men
hadn’t begun the work to form this nation, it wouldn’t exist as we know
it.

James said in 2:16: And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace,
be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things
which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? What good
was done when the one who could fill the need didn’t act upon the need?
The needy persons weren’t helped and faith of one who could help was
dead. It does little good to ask God to help people when the ones asking
aren’t ready or willing to act in behalf of God.

All too often, rather than be involved, the attitude is “Don’t ask me to
do it, let God do it.” God does do things on his own, but throughout
history, God’s plan is for people to do as Isaiah said, “Here am I, send
me.” When Isaiah’s attitude permeates the minds of God’s people, the
world will change, not to mention the change that will occur in the
lives of the believers who respond to God’s call.

The foregoing is not only Food For Thought, it is a call for the reader
to change his or her thinking to go to work for God. Not only think it,
but do it! Your name is now George.
