MAY HAVE AND MIGHT

There must be something in the water or maybe it might be "chem-trails" because logic and reason is in short supply concerning many issues discussed in the Voices column, especially those who think illegals should be licensed. In the letter of 11-21-2007 from the Texarkana, the writer thinks licenses for illegals might be just the thing, believing that there are more important issues than the illegal alien license hullabaloo.

She wants the new president to take care of “the Iraq war, health care, pensions, energy, jobs and the $9 trillion national debt …. Hold on now for logical minute. If certain ones get in power all those issues won’t be our only concern. The illegal situation will become a greater albatross around our necks, not that it isn’t becoming one at present.

Her proposal for identifying the illegals is as ludicrous as the idea of giving them a license. She wants them to produce a bona fide ID before giving them a license. Yes, they are driving without a license and giving them one won’t make the highways a bit safer. She admits that the illegals are using fake Social Security cards and thinks drivers licenses might solve the fake license problem. Where will they obtain the bona fide ID? Maybe from a Cracker Jack box which is as reasonable as expecting them to conform to our laws.

As with all fuzzy thinkers who make self the center of attention, the issue revolves around her and her desire to know who they are if she has an accident. So in order to protect herself, she wants all illegal to have a license just in case she has an accident involving one of them. The truth is that if they weren’t here in the first place, she wouldn’t need to worry about an accident with one of them, and in the second, there would be no need for the idiotic plans to issue licenses.

Illegal residents constitute a law violation and it isn’t a political football even though politicians in both parties have made it so. We are fumbling away the remedy for the problem. It is a very simple one. When caught driving or otherwise, send them home, making sure they get there. Of course, that will infuriate certain groups and make the president of Mexico mad who needs to be told to butt out of our affairs.

The writer said “like the governor of New York may have been on the right track.” Given that a drivers license includes voter registration as bonus that may have been the whole idea behind Spitzer’s intended action. Nothing like stacking the deck, loading the wagon, and fixing the deal to ensure loyal voters come election time. And the writer doesn’t want the issue to be made a political football.

The United States is a nation of laws which the writer and many others ignore. The illegals are just that, illegal, and giving them a license won’t make them any less illegal. In fact, it will give them a sense of belonging which they neither have earned nor deserve. People argue that they only want a better life and an opportunity to support their families. Fine, as long as they do it legally. But to reward them for their law breaking is no better than allowing a bank robber to rob the bank and open an account with the money, since after all he only wants to better himself by getting a piece of the pie. That is the illogical and idiotic reasoning that the people like the letter writer is attempting to make us accept. They seem to think that if they bleat long enough, we may have a change of mind and might accept their idiocy.

Hopefully, the so called leaders of this nation will awaken to the nature of the illegal problem and begin to enforce the laws. And along with that, a drivers license for the illegals might be a good idea. Issue to them a license that is only valid for one week as they drive themselves back across the border.
