Those who write to the Voices column never cease to amaze me, but they
shouldn’t. Yet the letter to Voices in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette,
Friday, 01-08-2010, created more amazement. The writer is sure that many
people like the health bill and the reason more letters don’t appear in
support of it is because those who don’t “may not have the time or
wherewithal to write as others have.” That is implying that only the
retirees and the wealthy are the only ones who have the time and money
to write. Such insight is most amazing. That the majority of the people
don’t want the monstrosity is apparently unimportant.

Then the writer made another amazing statement. The writer asked, “Won’t
the concerns about the deficits in Medicare and Social Security be
healed when our economy takes hold again?” The answer is no. Why? Both
were in the red long before the economy began to go into the tank and an
improvement in the funds available won’t do anything but prolong the
inevitable crash of both programs.

More amazing thoughts escaped from the writer’s brain and appeared in
print. The writer questioned the stance of those who are Christians
since they are against the bill and thought that those who write letters
against the health bill might be millionaires who didn’t want to pay
more taxes; so the writer trotted out the line that Christ admonished
those who are rich to support the poor. Yes he did do so, but he didn’t
say that help was to come from the government in any manner shape or
form.

Almost on queue, the writer used the rich young ruler and the
instruction from Jesus to sell his goods and give to the poor to achieve
eternal life, in an attempt to prove the point that the rich were to
help the poor through taxation. The truth is that the ruler was putting
his trust in his riches and Jesus told him to sell them and trust in God
for his salvation. Here is what transpired between Jesus and the man.
Jesus had been explaining the law. We’ll begin with verse 20 of Matthew
19: 20 The young man saith unto him, All these
things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that
thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven:
and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard
that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
That the man couldn’t bear to part with his possessions is the teaching.
There isn’t one word about him being taxed to support the poor through
government programs. Government taxation will not bring salvation to
anyone and neither will more taxes to pay for the health bill.

It is most amazing how those who know little of the Bible use it to try
to prove things of which they have little knowledge. But they do prove
that they are biblically ignorant and the ones who support big
government and more taxes generally fall into the biblically ignorant
category. They also fall into the constitutionally ignorant category and
prove it every time they champion more taxes and government solutions
for problems that the government in the main created.

The path to where we are today as a republic began with FDR and his
social welfare ideas. Government health care will only add to the broken
pavement littered with failed programs that are leading us to
destruction; going from a once independent people who now are
increasingly dependent on the government for everything.
