Evil lurks everywhere and sometimes those who support certain ideas do not realize that they are in effect espousing evil. A writer of a recent letter to Voices, in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette said that the unborn knew nothing until being born even though many studies conduct on the unborn reveal that they do know something and respond to stimuli at various stages of development. It is suggested that the writer of that letter doesn’t know anything about life. Another writer thinks that is wrong to require a woman to carry to term a baby she didn’t plan and doesn’t want. He wrote that it was a shame for the Arkansas legislature to force a baby on someone who didn’t want it. Both of them think that abortion is normal, natural and those who want it should have it. And in regard to the second letter, the shame is that the writer has a disregard for the value of life except perhaps his or her own. 

After Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe vetoed the 20 week abortion bill, a legislator said that he supported the veto because the cost to defend it would have run in to thousands of dollars, maybe millions. He just cheapened the value of life even more. What did Paul tell Timothy? For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (I Timothy 6:10)  Life has become nothing but a cheap commodity that costs too much money to allow or defend. That is the thinking of far too many people in the republic. Have the two letter writers, the governor and the legislator, ever considered where they would be if their mothers did not allow them to be born? Would they have chosen abortion for themselves and if not, what is the reason they support the decision of others to kill their unborn? Better yet, where do they find the right to enable the killing of the unborn?

A second evil is the gun control mantras being shouted from nearly every quarter of the land. Those who spout the idea that guns should be a banned are in the same league as those who support abortion. They do not believe that the intended victim should have any means to defend themselves from a thug bent on doing them harm. In the case of the unborn, they are defenseless and the gun hating crowd is attempting to force that defenselessness onto those who do not want to be a victim.

An unborn child has not caused anyone any harm and those who legally possess arms are not prone to cause harm to anyone either. When they do harm someone, (not including those with murderous intent) it is because someone is violating their safety and well being. But the major news media seldom report the instances that a gun owner used the piece to defend him or herself or others from criminals. To do so would negate their constant haranguing that guns are evil. It isn’t guns that are evil; it is those who use them to commit crimes that are evil.

There is a common denominator for both abortion and crimes involving guns. Abortion is the result, all too often, of engaging in immoral behavior and if immorality isn’t the issue, then a disregard for life is the reason which is also immoral. As for firearms, the issue is the immoral conduct of the criminal. And it is just as immoral for Congress/legislatures to prohibit law abiding citizens of the means of defense when confronted by criminals. Yet, congressmen and state officials surround themselves with armed guards. What is the reason they do so? Because they are much more important; their lives are worth so much more and they are more valuable than the lives of those who elected them. They won’t tell you that but they have no need to do so. Their actions betray them.

The solution to both abortion and firearms is to respect the life of the unborn and born. That begins with looking to God for guidance and then dealing with those who have no respect for life at any stage. Then and only then will the evil practices of the abortionist and those who allow it be brought to a halt. As for the firearms problem, when those who use guns in crimes suffer the full penalty of the law then society will change. When elected and appointed officials are held to account for their enabling behavior then society will change. When they understand that life other than their own is valuable, then society will be the better for it. When both the abortionists and those who support it, including public officials who also demand gun control, stop their behavior, then government sanctioned murderous intent will all but disappear.
