REAR VIEW MIRROR

As the Arkansas Legislature rides off into the sunset, the work of that august group will be discussed, cussed, dissected, ridiculed and lauded for their work. So let’s look at what was accomplished and what caused gnashing of teeth for some citizens, namely staunch liberal Democrats and those who lean that way for whatever reason.

Contentious issues rose to the fore during the session. Abortion and voter ID were the two big issues.  Two bills limiting abortion were passed twice each; once to send to the governor and then the other to override the vetoes. Voter ID had the same outcome. Of course the abortion crowd gnashed its teeth and the ACLU, headed by Rita Sklar, ran its considerable abortion loving mouth. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit to keep the laws from taking effect.

It is a given had the liberal Democrats controlled the legislature, those two life honoring laws would never have seen the light of day. It would be good if all those who voted against the bills and those who support abortion, to explain what they have against allowing another human to begin the journey of life. Don’t hold your breath; they won’t explain it and will utter such nonsense that a woman has a right to control her body and that it is the law under the Constitution. Neither one are correct nor constitutional because a demented court justice found an abortion mirage in the Constitution. He called it a penumbra of privacy based on his twisted reading of the document. Instead of twisted, reading tortured is the better word. In the end, Republican legislature showed its courage and supported life much to the chagrin of the pro-death bunch.

Another issue, voter ID, caused consternation among the let’s just operate as we always do. Voter ID helps keep people honest and it seems that the liberal Democrats don’t care much about honesty in voting. They claim that there isn’t any fraud even when fraud is exposed found. They claim that IDs suppress minority voter rights, but there isn’t one bit of evidence that it is true. Suppression is one the false arguments that Democrats trot out when their voting schemes are threatened.

John Brummett, columnist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, predicted all sorts of and manner of horrible outcomes because the voters elected Republicans. His columns made it obvious that in his mind the dumb voters would suffer for upsetting the lively status quo that identifies the Democrats. But as usual, liberals can never see the poor health of the forest for looking at the stunted trees that they create. To them, stunted trees are normal and that means they have lot more work to do to solve the problem. Unfortunately, all they ever produce is more stunted trees.

Change always causes grief for part of the populace, especially liberal Democrats, but the changes that were made received a measure of Democrat support, even from the governor, a committed nut job supporter. Taxes were cut and other issues received attention that should help the people of the state. The health insurance bill wasn’t the best deal but they had to work within the dictatorial mandated of the federal government. The big problem with using federal money is that the federal government does not have any money, but the governor remarked it was free money; that type attitude is heading us into financial oblivion

But all in all though, it was productive session. Even John Brummett in his April 25 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette column paid respect to the Republicans for their work. Surely we must watch for an earth quake or some other event when John praises an enemy of the liberals. The foregoing is the rear view and the future through the windshield looks good.
