| The New Food Pyramid |
|
Recently a new food pyramid has surfaced with U.S. Dietary Guidelines for better health. We would all like to experience healthy lives as long as possible. This new pyramid is more confusing than the ones previously used. Even the explanation on their website (www.MyPyramid.gov) still does not make it crystal clear. The only thing understandable when looking at the new logo is the addition of exercise (to the food groups). We all understand and realize the importance of putting exercise into the mix for healthy living. By now we all know of other ingredients that help us in this endeavor. We should resist fad diets that may help us lose weight, but those aren’t usually maintained over a long period of time. I like the "moderation in all things" adage. If we incorporate vegetables and fruits into our meal planning along with lean protein, use whole grains, cut back on large portions, use fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products (go to www.3aday.org), eat sweets, snacks, fats, and desserts less often or for only special occasions, and add the exercise to our daily routine, we can maintain the weight we desire, feel better, and stay healthier. Let's try it. KK © 04-22-2005 |
