TIME FOR REPENTANCE

Nineveh was a city of great wickedness, so God told Jonah to go preach to them. Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.  (Jonah 1:1-2.) Jonah told the people what would happen to them in verse 4. In verse 5 we read So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. God did not destroy them due to their change in behavior.

In the year 2013, the leaders of the Republic of the United States are participating with the ungodly in the chasing of foreign gods. As with the behavior of the people of Nineveh, the wickedness is apparent. The government is forcing taxpayers to pay for abortion; it is forcing people to pay for birth control whether they want to or not; it is threatening business owners with fines if they do not comply with the edicts; homosexual unions are glorified with many politicians in favor of homosexual “marriage.” Even Newt Gingrich wants to recognize the sinfully illicit relationships. A news article reported that [A] although Gingrich said he continues to believe marriage is defined between a man and a woman, he said there could be a distinction made between a "marriage in a church from a legal document issued by the state." So Gingrich wants the state to legitimize sin which is exactly what the homosexuals of both genders desire. It is to be done in the interest of equality.

God led the children of Israel out from the bondage of Egypt and they turned out to be a very ungrateful lot of people. Ingrates might be a better word for them. They didn’t appreciate what God had done for them, Deuteronomy 8:14. God reminded them of their attitude in verse 17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.  He told them in the next verse But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. God then delivered what would be the result of their continued disobedience. 19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

Just as surely as God destroyed parts of Israel, we are watching the disintegration of the United States. Murder, robberies, thefts and general mayhem are a daily occurrence in all sizes of communities. Convicts who should have been executed are allowed to plea bargain the sentence; they get out of prison and kill again. So called compassionate citizens who do not like the death penalty stand silent while the innocents are killed by the released convicts. They stand silent as the innocents, the unborn, are slaughtered at the hands of the abortionist. Two of the chief proponents of the slaughter are Kathleen Sibelius of Human Services and the nut job in the White House. He said in support of the slaughter that he didn’t want his daughter to be burdened by a baby if she made a mistake. Of course, when a child is not wanted sacrifice him or her to the great god of convenience.

The nut job said in his Christmas address to the nation “… it’s a time to celebrate the birth of Christ. To reflect on His life and learn from His example. Every year, we commit to love one another.  To give of ourselves.  To be our brother’s keeper.  To be our sister’s keeper.” Right, and again, except when the there is an unborn child that is an inconvenience to the expectant mother. Fine sounding words are nothing new for him; he just isn’t believable no matter what he says.

People of all stations of life speak and write of the greatness of the United States, but think back to what the nut job said. He said that the United States was the greatest county on earth and he was here to change it. Changes he has made, for the worse. The county was traveling down the wrong road long before he came on the scene, but he has accelerated the speed of the decline. A great nation does not sanction abortion; it does not sanction homosexual conduct; it does not protect murderers; it does not wink at the violations of political leaders, the nut job included.

Jesus was told of the Galileans who met with a terrible death, Luke 13:1. Luke recorded it the following way beginning in verse 2. He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? In verse 3 Jesus answered the question No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Do the politicians and certain citizens who support them believe that they and the people in general can ignore God without suffering the consequences? Will the politicians repent of their evil ways?

No is the answer. God will no more overlook the sins of the people of the republic than he did the ancient peoples and those of the days of Jesus. The message remains the same all though the ages: but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. What will be the response to the message of Jesus Christ? It is entirely up to the people whether the nation as group of people will repent and change their wicked behavior. The time for repentance is now.
