This article could well be titled as Central Planning Marches On, but no matter the words used, it still spells increasing government control of more facets of individual private life whether you want it or not. The schemers and planners never seem to grow weary of imposing more control on the citizens of a nation that began with its ideal of freedom from government and the liberty to conduct ones own affairs without interference by the bureaucracy. But as the years have passed, we have edged closer to that day when everyone will be told by some dull minded functionary “show me your papers.” A more correct statement is “we are now at this moment edging closer to the day when we will hear the words “show me your papers.”

Such behavior by the government began in the Depression Era with FDR’s New Deal. The minimum age reduced the freedom and liberty of businesses to set wages. Price and production controls further served to hamstring the productive capacity of the nation. Congress has forced auto manufactures to increase mileage of cars even though the results are killers for the people who buy the mandated politically correct higher mileage tin can death traps. Another target of the planners is light bulbs. Various schemes are proposed to force everyone into switching from incandescent bulbs to the mercury filled energy efficient bulbs. It is ominous to read what is proposed. (Click the light bulb URL below.) Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) said, "The last thing we want to do is force legislation down people's throats," Manzullo said. But he said the goal [is] to "greatly reduce the amount of electricity that lighting consumes" [and it] may require legislation to serve as a "focal point that you look at to try to move the country forward." That’s right. Move the country forward right into loss of freedom and liberty by instituting laws that enable tyranny because it is the best for everyone whether it is or not. 

Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, signed a mandatory health insurance bill into law. Every Massachusetts resident and family must buy health insurance or face penalties under the law. The law is being justified by saying that since auto insurance is required, therefore it is only right to require health insurance to protect the public. The last time I checked, sick people don’t cause injury to others by crashing into them or in any other way for that matter. He forced crutches onto people when they only needed some band aids.

But it gets worse. John Edwards, the two “Amerikas” presidential wannabe, is going to make national health insurance and checkups mandatory or else. Edwards said, "It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," … "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK." (Click on health care URL below.) Can you imagine the lines of perfectly healthy people waiting to see a doctor only to be told they are fine while those who need to see a doctor have to wait to see the same doctor? 

Edward’s type of mandates would make Karl Marx proud since he wants to pay for the cost by ending President Bush's tax cuts to people who make more than $200,000 per year. Marx said, “From those with the greatest ability to those with the greatest need,” or as LBJ said it, “We’ll take from the have and give to the have nots.” Hillary said she would take away from some to use for the greater good of society.

Have you noticed a common thread in the progression from the FDR New Deal days to the present? It began with controls on business and production, progressing to mandatory mileage, and onto co-operation between government and business of the Clinton era. The last step is the passage of laws that impose draconian regulations on individuals to satisfy the utopian dreams of grandeur and which will be nothing more than nightmares that will be all too real in the broad daylight.

Tyranny never quits as the days of “show me your papers” move ever closer, and if John Edwards, Barack Obama, Hillary, and the other liberals have their way, those days are closer than you think.
